Works offline

Once this page has loaded you can disconnect entirely and it still works.

This converter turns GIF images into JPG files without uploading anything. The conversion runs inside this page using your own device's processor, so your photos never leave your computer — there is no server copy to worry about, no queue to wait in, and no limit on how many files you convert.

GIF is a 256-colour format from 1987 that survives almost entirely because it animates and pastes anywhere. Universal, and the only animated format that works everywhere. JPG, by contrast, universal. If a program can open an image at all, it can open a JPG.

JPG remains the universal currency of images. When a system will not tell you what it accepts, or an upload keeps failing for no stated reason, a JPG is the file most likely to be accepted.

How to convert GIF to JPG

  1. Add your GIF files. Drag them onto the box above, click to browse, or paste an image straight from your clipboard. You can add as many at once as you like.
  2. Adjust the settings if you need to. The defaults suit most images. Raise the quality slider if the image contains text or flat colour. Pick a background colour if your image has transparent areas.
  3. Download the JPG file. Each file gets its own download button as soon as it finishes, and you can pull the whole batch down as a single ZIP.

What changes when you convert GIF to JPG

Every format conversion involves trade-offs, and vague tools hide them. Here is exactly what happens to your image in this particular conversion.

  • JPG has no transparency channel, so any transparent areas are filled with a solid colour. White is used by default and you can pick a different colour before converting — this is the single most common surprise when going from GIF to JPG.
  • JPG holds a single still image, so an animated GIF is reduced to its first frame. If you need the animation itself, you want a video converter rather than an image one.
  • GIF is lossless and JPG is lossy, so this conversion discards some detail permanently. At the default quality the difference is invisible on photographs, but flat colour, screenshots and text will show faint halos — keep the quality high for those.

What happens to the file size

Measured, not estimated: two 1200 x 800 pixels references — a photograph and a flat-colour graphic — put through this converter.

Yours will differ: size depends more on what is in the picture than on the formats involved.

About GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)

GIF is a 256-colour format from 1987 that survives almost entirely because it animates and pastes anywhere.

Where you probably got it: Memes, reaction images, simple animations and old web graphics.

Strengths

  • Animation that plays inline in email, chat and ancient software alike
  • Single-colour transparency
  • Understood by essentially every piece of software on earth

Limitations

  • Hard limit of 256 colours per frame — photographs come out banded
  • Very inefficient file sizes compared with modern formats
  • Transparency is on/off only, so edges look jagged

About JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

JPG is the lossy photographic format that has been the default for digital cameras and the web since 1992.

Support: Universal. If a program can open an image at all, it can open a JPG.

Strengths

  • Opens in literally every image viewer, editor, printer and web form ever made
  • Very small files for photographs, with a quality dial you control
  • Hardware-accelerated decoding on every phone and camera

Limitations

  • No transparency — transparent areas have to be flattened onto a solid colour
  • Lossy: each re-save discards a little more detail permanently
  • Blocky artefacts around sharp edges, text and flat colour

Is it safe to convert GIF online?

Here, yes — and you can check rather than trust. Open your browser’s developer tools, switch to the Network tab and convert a GIF file: no request carrying your image is made. Disconnect from the internet after this page has loaded and the converter still works, which would be impossible if a server were doing the conversion.

That is worth verifying wherever you convert, because most online converters do upload, and GIF files are so often personal photos and documents people would not hand to a stranger. Once a file is on somebody else’s server you are relying on a privacy policy rather than on anything you can observe. We wrote up how to tell a safe converter from a risky one in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert GIF to JPG?

Drag your GIF file onto the box above, or click it to browse. The conversion starts immediately in your browser and the JPG download appears within a second or two for most images. You can drop in a whole folder of files at once and download them together as a ZIP.

Are my GIF files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens locally in your browser, so your files are never transmitted anywhere — the tool even works with the network disconnected once the page has loaded. That is also why there is no file size or file count limit: nothing costs us anything per conversion. The practical ceiling is your own device's memory, which on a phone means very large images may fail.

Does GIF to JPG keep transparency?

It cannot — JPG has no transparency channel at all. Transparent pixels are filled with a background colour, which defaults to white. Use the background colour picker before converting if you need black or a brand colour instead. If you need to keep the transparency, convert to PNG or WebP rather than JPG.

Will converting GIF to JPG reduce the quality?

Slightly, by design. JPG is a lossy format, so it approximates the image to save space. At the default quality setting the loss is invisible on photographs; on screenshots and text you may see faint halos, so raise the quality slider or choose PNG instead.

What is the difference between GIF and JPG?

GIF is a 256-colour format from 1987 that survives almost entirely because it animates and pastes anywhere. JPG is the lossy photographic format that has been the default for digital cameras and the web since 1992. In practice the choice comes down to compatibility: universal, and the only animated format that works everywhere. Meanwhile universal. If a program can open an image at all, it can open a JPG.
